The Village
The Story Behind the Name
Portland's SE Division Street, or as many fondly refer to it, D Street, has a rich history in entertainment — most notably as the former home of the energetic D Street Corral (at 171st and SE Division). For decades, this popular venue hosted some of the biggest names in country western and rock 'n' roll. Just to name a few:
Community members would pack the busy venue to see their favorite performers up-close, to dance the night away, to gather with friends and make new ones in the heart of SE Division.
The D Street Village brand and building design were inspired by the vibe of the D Street Corral, and by the period graphics on the promotional posters of the legendary artists who performed there. They envisioned a similar vitality for the new community — the natural outgrowth of a "village" of creative eateries, retailers and services that would take up residence here and draw the community together.
Evolution of the Building
The original D Street Village building boasts a long history of service to the community beginning in 1941, when Safeway developed a new store on the site of an early home. In 1954, the building became Smith's Home Furnishings' flagship store, with a significant addition built in 1960. Smith's eventually closed this location in 1992, at which point it was acquired by our developers.
Nature's leased the building in 1993 and opened what became Portland's largest natural foods grocer. Wild Oats acquired Nature's in 2000 and subsequently closed the location, making way for the redevelopment plan that would define D Street Village.
Great care was taken by the development team to retain visual elements of the building's history in adaptive reuse renovations. Completed in 2013, the D Street Village we know today began welcoming residents and retail tenants, re-establishing the location as a gathering place for neighbors and all of Portland.
